Bio-Identical Hormones

The prescription and use of Bio-identical hormones (BIHs) is a key component of this program. BIHs are natural substances that have the same chemical structure as the hormones that are produced by the human body. BIHs create natural physiologic responses. They are natural substances that are found in all human beings. Bio-identical hormones replace hormones at an optimal and physiologic level that is not harmful to the body. Physiologic levels never exceed what the patient has been accustomed to in his or her younger years.

The term” Bio-identical” does not refer to the source of the hormone; bio-identical hormones are chemically processed from precursors found in vegetable sources, such as yams or soy, yet they are identical to the hormones produced by the human body. These hormones are able to follow normal metabolic pathways, so that metabolites are easily processed and excreted by the body, which ensures less toxicity and side effects.

Non-bioidentical hormones, on the other hand, have different structures from natural human hormones, which may cause excessive binding or unstable and incomplete binding to hormone receptor sites, resulting in different and undesired effects. In addition, the human liver was not meant to metabolize non-bioidentical hormones. Liver breakdown of non-bioidentical hormones takes place at a slower pace, permitting these hormones to accumulate in the body, and leading to possible liver damage and numerous undesired physiological side effects. For these reasons, this program does not endorse the use of non-bioidentical hormones.
