Botox® Cosmetic

The HD MedSpa & Clinic Botox® Experience

Botox® Cosmetic is a quick and minimally invasive procedure consisting of tiny injections of Botox® in affected facial skin areas.  Dr. Diaz determines exactly where to administer these injections to achieve the best results.  No anesthesia is required, though Dr. Diaz may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injection.

Most Botox® Cosmetic patients experience a marked improvement within days after the treatment, and the appearance of the treated area may continue to improve for up to a week.

Visible results have been shown to last up to 4 months.  After that time, many patients are ready to return for a follow-up treatment.  Everyone is different, and results generally vary.

Background and Overview

As of 2008, Botox® has been used therapeutically for more than 17 years to treat a variety of medical conditions.  It is approved in more than 75 countries and remains the most-studied botulism toxin and the one of the most widely researched medicines in the world.  In 2002, the same formulation, under the label BOTOX® Cosmetic, was approved by the US Food and drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people ages 18 to 65.

The lines that appear between the brows result, over time, from muscle movement.  When powerful muscles between the brows contract, they draw the brow together, causing the skin to fold or furrow.  As skin becomes less elastic with age, folds or furrows result in stubborn, permanent lines.

Because frown lines are dynamic and caused by over-active muscles, they can usually be treated with tiny injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Static lines, however, are lines that are visible even when the muscles are at rest.  These lines are usually treated with filler, such as Juvederm™, Restylane ™ or Perlane™ injectable gel.  Filler procedures are discussed in its own section.

Aesthetic Therapeutic Mechanism

During treatment, low doses of Botox® Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into these affected facial muscles that are responsible for frown lines between the brows.  By blocking the release of a chemical that causes these muscles to contract, Botox® Cosmetic enables them to relax.  The effects are localized and, when administered by an experienced physician like Dr. Diaz, do not affect your ability to smile, laugh, or otherwise show expression.  Botox® Cosmetic is the only product of its kind that has been approved for use in this area.

Possible Common Side Effects

The most common side effects following injection include temporary eyelid droop and nausea.  Localized pain, headache, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising may be associated with the injection.  Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.  Patients should stop taking aspirin for at least one week before procedure to decrease the risk of hematomas (blood brusing).

Potential Serious Side Effects

Serious heart problems and serious allergic reactions have been reported rarely.  If, after a Botox injection, you think you are having an allergic reaction or other unusual symptoms, such as difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, contact Dr. Diaz or your personal physician immediately.

How Often Can Botox Be Administered

The effects of Botox last about 3 to 4 months in most people. Full effects are seen in about 10 days after the injections. Patients should not get Botox injections more often than every 3 months to minimize the possibility of antibodies formation which can neutralize the Botox therapeutic effects in the future.
